Resolutions 2013- Pt. 2

I started blogging to keep track of my projects. I wanted to have an archive of my attempts and be able to see the progress I've made over the course of time. And, the blog is great for that. But, let's face it, part of the reason a lot of us blog is to get feedback; we want suggestions, tips, compliments, etc... It's time to turn thing up a notch. This year, I would love to expand my reach. During the last couple years, I've tried different ways to generate traffic- I can't tell you how many comments I've left on other people's posts, OY VEY!, trying to spark interaction with fellow bloggers. The return rate, in my experience, is about 10%- Kind of a shitty investment when the capital you're spending is time, and you already don't have much to spare. However, I've discovered people respond, overwhelmingly, when there's something a little sweeter than nice words in it for them; hello, GIVEAWAYS! Yes, that's right. I am not below bribery. Each month for the next year, I plan to host a giveaway. The rules will vary. The games will change. The prizes will be swell. Giveaways will be announced on the 15th of each month and will end on the last day of that month. So, keep your eyes peeled.

Additionally, I'm going to work on my consistency. I was more than a bit wayward during the spring/summer months last year, and the blog suffered as a consequence. I would like to work-on a more regular schedule and my accountability to this space. So, feel free to abash me with verbal abuse if I pull any disappearing stunts.

I am all ears to your suggestions for blog-building. What keeps you coming back for more? What sorts of features do you find yourself drawn to?

Also, when it comes to comments, do you like a response in the comments section? Do you prefer a visit and comment on your own blog? An email?

Hi Michelle, just wanted to pop in to offer some encouragement and say I really admire all the things you made last year! I first came when I saw those lovely yellow pajamas you made on Sew Retro. Then I was thrilled to see all the knitting you do too! I also sew and knit (but more sewing), and a bit of crocheting too (I crocheted two cowls for Christmas gifts but did not get my father-in-law's toque off the knitting needles in time). I was like you madly sewing at the end to complete a few gifts. Did you finish those pajamas in time? Anyways, on a blog I just love to see what people make, it is inspiring and makes me want to get at my own projects. I personally am not looking for comments (I don't have a blog), or responses to my comments, unless there really is something to answer or respond to, and definitely not looking to get an e-mail. Hey Michelle! I applaud your willingness to do what it takes (bribery) to get more traffic on your blog! I really enjoy your blog and read it regularly but don't always comment (some deep-seated insecurity left over from middle school, I expect). I like the tips, the FOs, and most of all, your sense of humor. I'm at a loss as to advice on increasing your traffic - I'm still mystified that people actually read mine. I use Twitter, Facebook, Ravelry (which is how I found your blog to begin with), plus I shamelessly promote my blog by pretending to casually insert references to it in everyday conversation while I have secretly rehearsed various scenarios in my head as to how I can relate knitting to topics for which it hasn't the slightest relevance. I had high hopes for blognation.com, but every time I've tried the link for the knitting blogs, I find the link is broken. *sniff*

While I don't have a ton of readers, I have a solid core group...and it was built over time...there are a couple of blog groups on Ravelry, plus I link up to a couple of weekly links....some days I get more traffic than others...and not everyone leaves comments...

I always visit and comment when someone visits my blog...and I try to read and comment on a couple of new blogs each week...sometimes they return, but not always...

What keeps me coming back for more? I think I just like to see what other knitters are doing in other parts of the country and world. I gain ideas, tips, new books to try, all sots of things. Oh, and photos of snow because we don't get that where we live now :)

With so many blogs out there it really is work to create something that draws and holds people. Giveaways are a great way to boost your numbers. Sadly lots will come for the chance and then never again - but a few will become regulars.
I wish that I had more time to spend visiting. The blogs I tend to frequent typically feature good pictures and funny/interesting/informative writing. I like to laugh and learn.
But I really encourage you to do what makes you happy. Otherwise it can easily go from a fun creative outlet to a dreaded chore. Good luck!
