I'm still riding high on the satisfaction of my previous sewing project, so I decided to continue my love affair with wool into this month.
Picture
Using Simplicity 5884, view 1, and some gorgeous tweed herringbone wool I stitched up my first sewing project of the year.

I really loved working with this pattern. I need more separates in my wardrobe and can easily see myself making a variety of skirts using the different styles. As far as modifications are concerned: I edited 4 inches off the length of the pattern, used quarter inch seams instead of "5/8 and I moved my zipper to the rear.

The fabric was a breeze to work with, but the pleats took some major muscle to press in, due to the dense nature of the material. (Obviously, I failed to extend the same level of care in ironing to the back-side... oopsy)

I hand hemmed, and stitched my waistband.  Also, I added a lining to my skirt. Because, 1. It's wool. 2. I have a really hard time NOT lining my garments. I just don't feel like they're finished, or they're somehow cheapened, if they aren't lined.

One month down, 11 to go! I'm off to a pretty good start and feeling like this is my year!! How are you resolutions holding up heading into February??

You did a wonderful job. and yes, no wool skirt should be without a lining. Zippers belong at center back, too.

That skirt is awesome! I've got to sit down and start practicing making clothing for myself. Previous attempts were horrible disasters but, hey, you can't be perfect the first time out!

Such a lovely skirt! I adore the pleats; what a simple way to add some eye-catching interest. It really makes the skirt look that much more special.

I used to feel the same way about lining, but I have since changed my mind and decided on making lovely seam finishes instead and wear slips.

I find it's more economical (which I guess you could read as "cheapening" the garment), but it also means silk (and occasional viscose) "lining" gets washed in a way that's suited for it, and the other fabric gets washed in a way most suited for it... and of course it means that dresses and skirts can work both as unlined summer garments and lined spring/early autumn garments.

I don't even wear skirts, but this looks fabulous! The pleats are very chic. Great job!
